The mission of the Tully Center for Free Speech is to educate university students and the public about the important value of free speech. Through education, resources and research, the Center will strive to contribute to the discussion of media law issues in New York State, the nation, and the world. Joan Tully's Vision Syracuse University alumna Joan Tully, a journalist, lawyer and businesswoman, left a legacy that links together her keen interests in media and law. She cared deeply about protecting and promoting freedom of speech. She wanted to encourage teaching and research about media law and free-speech issues, and to honor communicators who face free-speech threats.
