The mission of the Tully Center for Free Speech is to educate university students and the public about the important value of free speech. Through education, resources and research, the Center will strive to contribute to the discussion of media law issues in New York State, the nation, and the world.
Joan Tully's Vision
Syracuse University alumna Joan Tully, a journalist, lawyer and businesswoman, left a legacy that links together her keen interests in media and law. She cared deeply about protecting and promoting freedom of speech. She wanted to encourage teaching and research about media law and free-speech issues, and to honor communicators who face free-speech threats.

Research Shows Secretive Military Justice System

A new Tully Center research report released in August, 2008, shows that the public often can't find out what's happening in the military justice system. The law is clear that courts-martial and other hearings should be open, but the Center found that more than half of the military facilities contacted wouldn't give the public enough information to know what was going on or to attend. Considering the problems at Abu Gharib, increased deployments of service members and the questions about the military's role in Iraq, these findings become significant both for free speech rights and public policy.

This research is part of a comprehensive project "Secret Justice: Off Base" by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
